I wanted a painting in my living room to compliment the new orange wall and to pick up the blues in a painting Allan did of some van Gogh sunflowers. I started out with the intent to create an abstract in complimentary blue tones, but after working, re-working, layering and getting very frustrated, I changed the plan.
With blue the major requirement, Allan and I surfed paintings in classical, impressionist, post-impressionist, modern and American genres for the right feeling tone and color notes
We found it in Surf and Rocks, a magnificent oil painting by American artist Childe Hassam in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Art. It was done in 1906 and is smaller than mine, at 20 x 30 inches.
I love how mine turned out. It fits the living room and is full of vibrating blues. Here it is, my own…
