While we
sleep, the modern wind turbine blades spin in a rhythmic whir,
capturing power for our needs. This popular energy takes us
far away from the world of foreign fossil fuels. It represents
a positive future and I want to express this through my art.
The result is my series of large paintings of wind turbines
in natural environments.
Wind energy
as an art form is fairly new. The American
Wind Energy Association first sponsored an art show as part
of their Windpower 2004 Conference and Exhibition. Andrew Perchlik
of REimaginations
took the lead.
I worked
for many years in the maritime industry. West coast ports unload
these gigantic wind turbines in pieces from ships. In an orchestrated
ballet I watched and photographed the process whereby ships,
trucks, and men move these heavy pieces to their permanent locations.
I have stood in awe at the bases of these tall wind towers in
remote and scenic places in the Northwest. They inspire me to
paint.
There is
a beauty in these moving forms. They remind me that Monet captured
the railway stations and trains when they were new. Ive
added natural symbols in composing these paintings.
The scale
of these mammoth wind energy machines encourages me to paint
large. I hope they have an impact on those who see my paintings,
and remind us all to protect our environment the best we can
when taking steps to preserve our energy future.
Artists
have forever tried to capture movement and motion.
